Why Things Get Worse!

How and why we have found ourselves in this situation in the country is what many ponder from time to time. It may interest us to know some of the foundational problems that have led to Nigeria's current state.

1. Privatization of Public Enterprises: Private enterprises buy public assets, operate, maintain, and set their own prices with the aim of making profits. Their bills and tariffs often become a burden to citizens.
2. Selling your Right/ Vote buying: Just like a transaction, you pay for what you want, and in exchange, you get what you demanded. Once you sell your vote, you have sold your expectations from the government. Vote buying won't elect patriotic citizens willing to serve the nation. Some cups of rice and cash may lead to long-term suffering.
3. Lack of a Price Regulatory Agency: We set up all kinds of agencies, yet we lack one responsible for controlling the prices of goods in the market. There should be a stable pricing for a period, regulated by a competent agency. It is also absurd that an increase in one commodity affects many others disproportionately.
4. Flamboyant Spending by the Government: Lavish expenditures by public officials show misplaced priorities in governance.
5. Bad Roads: Transporting farm produce to markets becomes difficult due to poor road conditions.
6. Insecurity: Business cannot thrive with insecurity, and this scares away foreign investors.
7. Lack of Transparency in Empowerment Programmes and Human Capacity Building: When we see all these programmes circulating on social media, they don't reach the target audience genuinely willing to apply.
8. Government Investment in Projects Only for Civil Servants and the Rich: Many housing schemes are mainly for civil servants and permanent workers. Today's government doesn't target the poor for affordable housing benefits.
9. Few Charity Homes and Poor Distribution of Charity Items: Some people give only for public attention, whereas their actions have caused the death of many. If more charity homes or annexes were built within places of worship, the government could receive donations from generous givers and distribute directly to the poor—instead of taking them to warehouses and then distributing them to party loyalists in contested areas.
10. Overpopulation and Lack of Accurate Census Data: Without reliable census data, the government cannot effectively plan or provide for the population. What cannot be contained will either overflow or explode.
